Club Night 17th January

"Something old" brought out a nice selection of models on what was a rather quiet night for the club.
But, as always, work in progress revealed such delights as a Challenger 1, Leopard 2 and the Atomic Cannon taking shape ready for display later this year.

The main highlight of the evening was a slide show from Dave Berryman. Entitled, "Things you will never see again", this was a real feast for the eye. Based mainly around shows in Devon & Cornwall, we were treated to a line up of Hunters, Lightning F1 & F2a's, Sea Venoms (still in service then) as well as the "new" Phantom for the Royal Navy. Also featured were the Beverly, Hastings, Argosy, Andover and a sand and brown Hercules.
Not forgetting Dave's other love of vintage vehicles, we were also treated to a privately owned DUKW, Scammel lorries in civilian guise and a strange conversion of a M3 halftrack to a four wheeled breakdown truck!
This show was warmly received by a very appreciative audience.

Next month, the club will be displaying at Milton Keynes and Yeovilton shows. A busy year extends ahead of us and judging by the boxes on the table last meeting, our future displays will feature much that is new and unusual.

First Club Meeting of 2012

The abysmal weather did not keep many members away from this, the first meeting of the New Year.Along the lines of “What did Santa bring?” most members turned up sporting their seasonal haul of new kits, ranging from a rather startling 1:24 scale London bus, 1:32 aircraft, to field artillery and a Cold War Soviet APC, topped perhaps by a Haynes Tiger Tank Owners’ Manual.Work-in-Progress models included a Chieftain Mk 3 from the venerable Tamiya offering, a Canadian conversion of the Leopard 2A6 (and good luck to Brian Rose when he has to paint this particular beast!), and a 1:35 Gepard anti aircraft tank, with excellent etch details added by Mick Ellis.Completed models on the table included aircraft, figurines, and a finely detailed Japanese submarine, causing club members of a certain vintage to reach for their reading glasses in order to identify the superb detailing on this particular model.All in all, a good start to the year and an enjoyable evening.

IPMS Salisbury Christmas Meeting

Last Tuesday saw the last meeting of the year for us with a feast of models to view as well as mince pies and other delicacies which were very kindly provided by the Hon. Tres. for us to consume, as we enjoyed our evening. The themes of the Pacific, 1941 and the letter “C” provided three tables of models between them. In addition, we also had several Spitfires, a Russian APC & sundry other models, including a start from our Patron Saint of Lost Causes in the form of a Nimrod MRA4 under construction.

The evening was also enhanced by a slide show from Bill Allan on the Israeli Air Force museum. Many thanks too, to Richard Clarke, who provided the AV equipment for us to view them on.

Club Night 6th December

A quiet evening – probably due to the recession, global warming, a nuclear Iran and impending Christmas!

Members brought in enough models and publications though to promote a fair amount of interest and discussion. Mick Ellis contributed with an ad hoc slide show depicting, amongst others, the Battle of Britain flight in all their stripped-down mechanical glory. Slide show equipment courtesy of Richard Clarke, for which we are very grateful; models on the table included a What-if Panzer from Peter James, a Seahawk in Suez colours, a stunning SA8 “Gecko”, a half-built Trumpeter BTR 50, an almost finished BRDM 1 (a recurring theme here Mr Chairman – try and finish something!) and a model not often seen at shows, a rare Swingfire equipped Ferret.

Don’t forget that the next Club night will include mince pies, as well as the theme night of 1941 Pacific and the letter “C”.

MIDDLE WALLOP HOBBIES DAY

Just down the road was the bijou showette of Middle Wallop. Situated in the rear of the museum were a select group of model clubs and traders, all displaying their wares.

Five members, all wearing “uniform”, manned the tables, with several other club members dropping by. We had an excellent selection of models, all labelled and I did take the liberty of “planning” our display. The result was well worth it, with a constant stream of visitors, many question and discussion sessions plus a lot of photographs. Well done all.
Not large shows by any means, but the organisers were well impressed. As always, many of us took advantage of the trade stands, as well as meeting fellow modellers for a chat. There was a great deal of interest in our show next year as well, so we are obviously popular!

This is the last show of the year and I think it was a nice friendly, relaxed way to end.

BMSS Bugle Call Show 20th November 2011

Despite the apparent proximity of Bath, it still required a fairly brisk start to get to Bugle Call, the BMSS’ annual show. So it was that Don Bartlett, Richard Clarke, Brian Rose, Dec Sibley, Pete Smith and Brian Stoddart all ploughed through the early Sunday morning mist and dead badgers to meet at the Pavilion Hall. Dave Berryman was also on parade manning the Air Cadets tables.

Setting up is now a pretty slick operation and we were soon the proud possessors of a nicely balanced stand, with no small emphasis on figures, supported by some armour and a diorama. The revamped cut-out sign, courtesy of Dec Sibley’s efforts, worked well, our stand easily being the most recognisable.

Sad to say, but the uptake by Joe Public was noticeably down this year and for most of the morning it felt like our efforts were only being viewed by other club members or even traders.

Two traders in the end did not turn up which was bad news for those looking to part with their money, but good news for those traders who were present.

The stands displayed a variety of models, some really first class, and the imagination shown in some vignettes had to be seen to be believed.

IPMS Salisbury At The Nationals

Today we have a very comprehensive selection of pictures form the recent IPMS nationals at Telford courtesy of our club secretary Peter James. The new display is defiantly a vast improvement on our old set up and we received plenty of compliments during the show. As you can see it was again a very busy event with several opportunities to part with some money! The pictures are a mix of club stand and competition models.

Club Night 15th November Russian Night

The second meeting of the month saw the theme of anything Russian and as you can see there where plenty of fine models on display. We also had a post Telford look at all the new kits that our members had purchased. Bill Allen also provided a slide show featuring pictures from his visit to the Israeli armoured corps memorial and museum at Latrun, a true feast of armour especially sherman variants.

Speaking of the IPMS nationals there will be a feature here soon with plenty of pictures for all those who could not make the event this year. Also IPMS Salisbury will be attending the BMSS show Bugle Call in Bath on the 20th November so see you there.

Club Night 19th July

A somewhat sparse attendance this Tuesday, but then again, school holidays and other preoccupations are nigh this time of year.

The theme was “Something Old”, which encompassed a wide range of old kits still in the box, some old built favourites dragged out for the occasion, and miscellaneous works in progress, all supported by some interesting magazines and reference books.

The pictures show all, but one of the more esoteric included Dec Sibley’s Russian Mil 6 Russian Helicopter, with instructions in German, Polish, Russian (Cyrillic script of course) and a couple of other unidentifiable languages. This blast from the past hailing from the former Soviet Union and presumably marketed for modellers within the Warsaw Pact.

So, all in all, a rather quiet evening and we are all looking forward to getting around the shows once the summer is over.

IPMS Salisbury Annual Show Report & Pictures

Well, it meant another Christ o’ clock start, but the weather was fine, so getting up early was relatively painless. Of course the donkey work had been completed the previous afternoon, and a big thank you to all the Club members who turned up; the increase in our membership was reflected and it all seemed to take far less time offloading the tables, laying out the hall, and the inevitable scores of minor tasks such as notices, extra lighting and of course, the Club stands and the themed display, which this year was “Anything in the Desert (or conceivably, flying over it)”.

Doors opened at 0930 and the steady trickle of early visitors soon thickened up, so that by around midday, the venue was getting pretty full, and warm; as usual, and here I’m probably tempting fate, the weather was its normal self for our show – sunny!

Although some clubs sported some old favourites, it was nice to see some new exhibits; once again, a very high standard of modelling was noticeable. Of particular note to me, was an outstanding “What if” TSR2, supported on 2 clear plastic rods from the jet exhausts, but also sporting 2 contrails from the wingtips. Not unconnected, but on another stand, was another “What if” in the form of an F111 in RAF service; some very imaginative modelling here!

A big thank you to all the clubs and traders, and the pressed gang of “volunteers” in the canteen corner.
The ensuing photographs give a flavour of the show, but of course, it was not possible to document every club or model; suffice to say perhaps, that it all seemed to work yet again.
Hopefully, we’ll see you all next year.

IPMS Gloucester Show Saturday 7th May

Although some distance away, this was another good show courtesy of Gloucester IPMS at the community centre at Churchdown. A fair few traders and several clubs all made for an interesting event. Salisbury set up with a mix & match of old display units and the new, but Brian Stoddart insisted on shelving in order to display small scale models; it has to be said perhaps, that for small scale or indeed, such detailed models as waterline naval vessels, shelving does enable the paying public to scrutinise (and hopefully enjoy) whatever is on display. The plinth system only facilitates an oblique downward study; discuss!

The photographs give a flavour of the show; notable amongst displays were a 1:72 Bristol Brabazon, still sadly "in progress" (but will be a stunner when completed), an extremely inspiring accessory set for 1:72 TSR 2 "what ifs", and a very impressive Warsaw Pact 1:35 collection of armour and rather esoteric radar-based
models from the Warrington IPMS; they, in fact, ended up with an award for the best display - well deserved.

The Salisbury display consisted of John Marriott's eclectic sci-fi collection, Roger Doswell's large scale selection, some fine Spitfires from John Hazel, and Brian Stoddart's small scale armour and missile efforts. Dave Berryman was manning his usual Cadet stand with a collection of RAF aircraft and associated vehicles.

Another well worth show that more Club members should pencil-in next time around. Many thanks to Gloucester IPMS.

Once again we where at North Somerset for their annual show. Brian S, Mick Don and Pete managed to fill the tables with a nice variety of models. Another great day with plenty of bargains especially the new hobbyboss 1/35th Defender at £17.00, at least three disappeared under the Salisbury tables. Some superb models where on display on the various club stands as well as north Somerset's superb display as seen at last years nationals. May thanks to the north Somerset guys for a great day.

As this was our final meeting before our show the night consisted of a briefing for the show as well as a dress rehearsal for the club displays. There where also a good selection of models from the members.

Hendon show Sunday 23rd May

Four of our members braved the hot weather and traffic to attend this show held at the RAF museum on Sunday, Here is Peter James report.

It was the hottest day of the year so far, so what did four mad modellers do? They went to the RAF Museum!
The model show was spread throughout the Main, Bomber Command & Milestones halls. Traders were all in the Michael Beetham annex, which at least ensured that everyone visited all of them! Here it was very noticeable that the majority of traders were offering second hand kits. A sign of the recession perhaps? Hannants were also open just down the road & were also doing a good trade.
In the show, we had a quiet corner along side the magnificent Stranraer, but we did have probably the best lighting & it was cool! The Bomber Command wing was rather dark for a model exhibition, whilst those in the Milestones Hall had excellent light but very high temperatures to contend with.
With such a large venue, it was difficult to estimate numbers, but there seemed to be a steady stream of visitors wandering around all day.
Museum wise, the Wellington is about to depart for Cosford & some major work & will be replaced with a Havoc. The Beaufort, made up from five wrecks in New Guinea looks superb in Malta markings. There seems to be a clutch of helicopters which have invaded the main hall, but I suppose they too have a place! It is nice to see the training aspect well represented as well, with a Harvard, TMk3 glider & a Chipmunk as well as a Jet Provost on display.
No Sales from tables was the rule, but, we are modellers & that is what we do, so everyone ignored this & just kept it low profile.
A good day at a marvellous museum, with a perhaps low key but enjoyable model show thrown in. Well done the RAF Museum & IPMS Harrow for organising it.

Club Night 18th May Annual Shield Competition

A major event in our club's calender is the in house model show and our memorial shield competition coming just before our annual show this event gives us all a chance to show off all our builds from the previous year and to admire many fine models. The hall quickly filled up with members setting up on individual tables and displaying there wares.

The competition table soon filled up with models ready for judging. This year the three previous winners of the shield had the difficult task of picking a winner and after much deliberation the shield was finally awarded to Brian Stoddart for his superb CVR(T) in Belgian markings. Well done Brian.

Don't forget that the next meeting on the 1st June is the model show briefing and dress rehearsal.

IPMS Gloucester Show Sunday 9th May

The club attended IPMS Gloucester's annual show today. We where ably represented by Mick Ellis, John Hazel, Roger Doswell, Brian Rose our chairman, Peter James our club secretary and Pete Smith. Again two tables where filled with ease with models. A very enjoyable day with most of the members stocking up on books and essential supplies with the odd kit thrown in for good measure. There where some great models on display and a good mix of traders to keep everyone browsing. Many thanks to IPMS Gloucester for hosting the day.

Club Night 4th May

Another busy night was had by all. Plenty on very interesting models where displayed by the members as well as a few boxes to pour over. We also had a mini demonstration put on by Pete Smith showing the effectiveness of winsor & newton Galeria acrylic matt varnish. Although designed for the art world this varnish is superb for modelling purposes being easy to apply either through an airbrush or painted on using a brush.
Show news now and Don reported that all was going well. Remember that the next club night is our in house model show so don't forget to bring your models!
We will be attending IPMS Gloucester show this weekend on the 9th so do come and say hello.

Club Night 20th April St George's Night

St George's Night.

The theme was "British Armour" and some twenty club members produced over 120 models, ranging from Harold Godwinson, ready to face William, Duke of Normandy to a Braveheart AS90.
World War One saw two MkIV Males & two Whippets. From between the wars there were Vickers Medium & Light tanks, before the start of the Second World War with Matildas 1 & 2, lots of variations on the Crusader chassis, Centaurs, Cromwells & a lone Churchill, Achilles & Comet.
The start of the modern era was represented by a Conway & several Centurions, M107, a Berlin Chieftan & several Challenger 1 & 2's, before finishing with an AS90.
Support vehicles were not forgotten, with a collection of 1/76th post war support vehicles.

Looking ahead, May is a busy month for the club. We have our own "in house" model show on the 18th, plus we will be displaying at Gloucester & the RAF Museum, Hendon.

Poole Vikings Show Saturday 17th June

Another good day out for the club with five members displaying these where Mick Ellis, John Hazel, Roger Doswell, John Marriott and Pete Smith. We managed to fill two six foot tables with ease. Don, Brian S and Richard & son also attended. A good mix of clubs and traders where in attendance with some very nice models on display. Gong wise John Marriott won a Gold in the competitions for his Borg figure. Thanks to Poole for hosting a very enjoyable day.

As you can see Information about our annual show has now been posted and the show features lots of things for the whole family to enjoy. This year the children's "make & take" is brought to you courtesy of Airfix. Also something new this year will be practical demonstrations which will be covering basic airbrushing and weathering as well as other hints and tips. Lastly of course not forgetting the superb tombola and a great selection of refreshments including a mouth watering selection of home made cakes! A list of traders attending as well as clubs will be posted shortly.
Be sure to make a note of the date in your diary for a truly cosmopolitan model show experience!

Club Night 6th April

After the Easter break the club night kicked off April nicely with a varied selection of built models as well as in progress builds and lots of lovely boxes filled with plastic and resin to look at. Peter James arrived with a rather large box which contained a Dragon 1/35th scale leopald gun,this soon had a crowd of members around it marvelling at the size of the kit. Good luck on building that Peter we look forward to seeing it built soon!
Brian Rose brought his Trumpeter 1/48th scale F100D sabre in for a look. This was a work in progress and looked very nice indeed sporting some super detail. We were also treated to a slide show from Bill Allen on US navy aviation.

For those who are going the next show we are attending as a club will be Poole Vikings show on the 17th April 2010.
Also a reminder that our next club night's theme is St George's night with anything from the British army AD 01 TO 2010 and the subject letter "T" so plenty of choices for everyone to bring something in for that one. Even if it's not in camo colours!
